That itch 2.0

Writer's picture: Laura MartinLaura Martin

Starting out in a new country isn't for everyone. It turns out it is for me. After growing up in the Netherlands (the buzzing port city of Rotterdam), my kiwi husband and I moved to New Zealand with our two young kids. We lived in rural Hawke's Bay up until this year; a period of 9 years. Havelock North was a beautiful village with mouthwatering wineries and stunning beaches within reach, but after a while we just had that itch again. His love for ships and maritime brought along an opportunity in Houston, so we have moved here in July '24. I'm loving the warm humidity (yes, folks, I really don't care it makes my hair frizzy), the Southern hospitality (as warm as it's climate) and the multicultural hub that makes Houston so unique and colourful.

When it comes to itches, my travel itch isn't all that different from my writing itch. Building a life - a career - as a writer is a tough challenge. Not surprisingly, I have ventured into 'safer' territories to ensure a stable income for many years. Yet I kept coming back to the most beautiful creative process I know. While my home is literally still stacked with boxes that I keep bumping my toes into, I have been working on finishing Blame The Dogs, my debut novel. This is expected to be released in the first quarter of '25. Are you an avid reader, member of a bookclub or you have this insatiable hunger for fiction? Are you keen to be involved in not just the end result, but the process? I am still on the lookout for some exceptional Advanced Readers. These are readers who enjoy fast-paced contemporary women's fiction and want to assess early copies of my books on any major inconsistencies or errors.
